Orange Pop pins...

For almost a good year I have been hooked. Hooked on Pinterest. Anything I come across like, wish, need, love or need to remember I add to one of the lists I curate here.

Pinterest is truely a great site. An easy to use visual feast, but oh so easy to loose track of time. Yup, an inspirational trap in cyberspace as there's always something or somebody to discover. So... would you ever wonder where I'm hanging out, good chance you'll discover a new pin from me here.

Digital cover

At the moment I'm working on a moodboard for a completely new magazine. An inspirational magazine about arts, design, travel and culture - connected and related to the Dutch creative scene. So much inspiration to be found online, this just being a fun example...

Dot, comma and sugar, please!

Some beautiful work of Dutch stylist Carline van Oel. The inspiration...!

Update: Unfortunately it's impossible to embed the video but you can view it here...

Collage

Sometimes it's just fun playing around. Collage created by OrangePop, via Polyvore.

Pig 05049

Currently I’m working on the PR and marketing for a marketing communications game that will be launched during the upcoming TEDx Amsterdam. Of course, it’s exciting enough that Amsterdam is organizing an independently TEDx event, but since the game will be launched at the TEDx it’s double the fun.

Anyway, while checking out the program for the TEDx I found that one of my favorite young Dutch designers, Christien Meindertsma will attend and talk about her famous PIG 05049 project. PIG 05049 is an extensive collection of photographic images that documents an astounding array of products that come from different parts of an anonymous pig called 05049. In this book, Christien reveals lines that link raw materials with producers, products and consumers that have become so invisible in an increasingly globalized world.

Christien was recently awarded the prestigious Danish Index Award 2009 in Communications Design (!) for this project. PIG 05049 has also won the Dutch Design Award for best Graphic Design, the Rado Young Design Award and the Golden Eye. At this point in time Christien is in the running for the Rotterdam Design Prize 2009 for various works; her most recent work being the Urchin Pouf, as seen during i.e. the last Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven.

So… if you have a chance to check out the live-stream this coming Friday, make sure to listen to Christien’s talk! She's too promising to miss out on!

Sweet dreams

A couple months ago I watched this wonderful sweet video, and although I immediately thought it was beautiful, I totally forgot about it until I ran into it again today.

This video is made by Kirsten Lepore who studied experimental animation at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). This is Kirsten's senior thesis, and took a year to get it to what it is right now. After seeing it, you'll have to agree that every minute spent was worth the effort. Cupcakes never had more personality.

Spheres of fury

Tim Brown
and Christopher Hewitt teamed up and created this brillant video for Hecq Vs Exillion.

The video was shot with a Canon 7D - Canon should be so honored with this visual, a true compliment to what the new cam can do!

Mysterious letters

Designed to prompt neighborly discussion and promoting community curiosity, Michael Crowe and Lenka Clayton decided to write a handwritten letter to everybody in the world. This project kicked off writing to every single household of Cushendall, Ireland. In two weeks time Michael and Lenka wrote 467 letters, and in trying to be personal they put in the time and effort to make each letter entertaining and stunningly beautiful. Imagine receiving such a letter? How wonderful would that be? I hope one day I will find one on my doormat too...

Amorph

I was truely stunned after I watched the video and reading the thesis about Funktionide, a concept by young German Stefan Ulrich or Eltopo. According to Eltopo Funktionide reflects upon how new technologies will change future products, and the way we interact with them. The Funktionide is an amorph object whose intention is to provide the user with a atmosphere of presence thus counteracting the feeling of loneliness.

Eltopo also created an amazing liquid wall (do check this!), to able people for authenticity and presence of materiality, and with this he and Yi-Cong Lu were named winners of the International Design Award 2009.

Orange Pop Photography

Lately I've been taking many pictures again (old habits die hard) so I thought I'd 'surprise' you with some, being a little 'peek' in Orange Pop's life at the same time. For the blog I've combined indivial original pictures, making themed sets; each set consisting of three pictures.

If you're interested and would like to show these pictures on your site, please make sure to mention 'Orange Pop Design' including a link to this blog. For more information, just contact me via email. Thank you :)

Paradise

Lucky me (and my scheduled trip to Arnhem); I found another treasure, called Het Paradijs. Het Paradijs is the initiative of illustrators Maaike Burgers, Hanna Hermans, Esther Horchner and Els ten Klooster who create the most wonderful work. The work of these 4 ladies is full of energy, so inspiring... even their everyday mail is turned into little pieces of art. Besides illustrating, they also like to make bags, broaches, wallets, and more. Hope to see more of them in the future!

Liking the lace

Images by Merel Boers

Lace has been back for a while now, I mean lace is all over the place when it comes to design. A great event I visited earlier this year, completely devoted to the latest lace trends and ideas, was the 'Kantlijnen' exhibition in Bruges, Belgium.

More and more young artists and designers are unashamedly using lace in their patterns and themes. They have discovered the true beauty of lace: the richness of its transparency, the fluidity of it silken lines and the delicate interplay between ornamentation and structure. With new techniques and new materials, they have given lace new meaning. Lace once again has its own place in contemporary culture.

I'm expecting to see a lot of new lace-a-likes design soon...
