Droog just released 'Too beautiful to hide'. A hot water bottle by Dutch designer Wendy Legro. With its soft skin and unique aesthetics, this one for sure is too beautiful to hide.

“The hot water bottle tends to be an underappreciated product. It has a beautiful function but an outdated appearance. I wanted to reflect the feeling the bottle gives you in the aesthetics of the product,” says Wendy.

Floating bench

The balloon floating bench is designed by Japanese studio h220430. This bench was visually inspired by the feeling of floating that the main character felt in the beautiful French movie “Le Ballon Rouge” from 1953.

This floating bench combines modern technology with classic touches and a smile. Although it appears to be held up by bunches of balloons at either end but is actually suspended from anchor points in the ceiling, concealed by clusters of polyethylene balloons.

From day one I've been a huge Odd-fan. Odd Magazine is "completely conceptualized and realized by a group of 30 students of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, It explores six connections between seven people in the creative industry. Inspired by their personal stories and fashion visions, the magazine reveals an unexpectedly beautiful world of fashion, photography and illustration that is just a little bit odd."

An concept and initiative that continues to exceed many expectations. And now, with the magazine being available for the iPad, and the movies featured in the online version, it's mindblowing. W.O.W.

The LLOVE Hotel is an amazing one month exhibition consisting of guest rooms created by Dutch and Japanese designers, such as Joep van Lieshout, Pieke Bergmans and Richard Hutten. Not only is the hotel an exhibition you can visit, but you can actually book an overnight stay.

The LLOVE concept for this this unique temporary hotel was created by Suzanne Oxenaar, Artistic Director of the Dutch LLoyd Hotel in Amsterdam.

Dutch Design Week

Today's the last day of the Dutch Design Week, the largest annual design event in the Netherlands. This past week Eindhoven has been the mecca for the amazing discovery of around 1,500 talents, ideas and products from design disciplines such as industrial design, concept design, graphic design, textile & fashion, spatial design, food design and design management & trends.

It's too much to list all that stood out, but let me share the work of some of my personal favorites, starting with Sanne Sofia Broks and her Suitcase 20 Kilogram Generation.

The concept of 'temporary design' is again taken to a new level when keeping traveling and identity in mind. Another great example was the fabulous work of Lotty Lindeman and her suitcase closet two years ago.

This year Sanne surprises us with her suitcase that will allow anyone to give an unfamiliar space a bit of a personal and homier touch. The suitcase and it's compartments turn into functional stylish interior objects, adding extra functionality to the suitcase. Your identity is no longer restricted to the twenty kilograms that fit inside the suitcase.

d'Espresso

New coffee bar the d’Espresso Cafe in New York based it’s design on the interior of a library. Never a dull moment in this library; to make sure heads would turn, the interior was spun around, shifting each part 90 degrees. The floor was shifted to the rear wall, the library stacks were shifed to the floor, ceiling and outer walls, and the library ceiling became the back of the bar. Great place to enjoy coffee over a good book.

The twist of the interior design by Nema Workshop reminds me a lot of the Viktor & Rolf store in Milan, which unfortunately had to close it’s doors in 2008. In the Viktor & Rolf, by Dutch interior architect and art historian Siebe Tettero, literally everything was turned upside down. The rug was on the ceiling and the chandeliers were on the floor. Even the names of the designers were upside down on the shop window. Those were the days...

Homemade is best

Ikea's new cookbook 'Homemade is Best' presents ingredients in a visually stunning original and graphical way. Instead of focusing on the end product, Ikea takes the concept of ‘food that looks great’ to a completely other level and focuses on the ingredients. The presentation makes you respect and understand better what end products are made off, focusing on the real, good and simple.

To top it off with, Ikea also launched the Kondis iPhone app where food, fit and fun are brought together. The app tells you what you need to do to burn those calories off and can indulge guilt-free afterwards.

Bristol-based Zara Picken is a young illustrator who is influenced by mid-century modern design and has a passion for old paper-based ephemera. Her work is retro-tinted with textured blocks of colour, and combines digital and handmade elements.

Studio Gorm has designed a wonderful kitchenette "where nature and technology are integrated in a symbiotic relationship. In this kitchen, processes flow into one another in a natural cycle, efficiently utilizing energy, waste, water and other natural resources. It provides a space not only for preparing food but an environment that gives a better understanding of how natural processes work. A kitchen where food is grown, stored, cooked and composted to grow more food."

I love the clear and simple lines of their designs, and this kitchen is just another perfect example of the signature style that they have truly mastered; great 'Dutch' design with a twist as seen by many Droog Design items.

Studio Gorm is a collaboration between American John Arndt and Korean Wonhee Jeong who met while studying in the masters program at the Dutch Design Academy in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

Train tray surprise

Every now and again there's someone who can really surprise us. One person who does for sure is English Dominic Wilcox. Dominic created a 'pop up train tray surprise'. What a great treat! For sure a fresh look on street art, graffiti and guerrilla art, putting some smiles on people's faces!

Dominic was recently featured on many sites with one of his latest projects, called 'by a thread' where cotton thread is wound onto a wooden cane, one spool at a time. 'By a thread' is now on show at the Designhuis in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

Life is a beach

As it's getting warmer and warmer I find myself longing for a quick run on the beach and then dive in the ocean. Bringing summer home with the salty skin and sand between my toes being sweet souvenirs. Always having lived close by the ocean, at times I truly miss the air, waves, sand, sounds and breezy style that can only be found near the beach.

Realizing how much I miss it, and then seeing the beautiful images on Victoria's blog were like a nice fresh splash in the face, feeling like virtual evening skinny dipping. Especially on hot summer nights like these. Happy to have tomorrow off... guess where it will be spent? Life is a beach...!

Dutch Interior Design firm i29 designed the new interior of this splendid 1930s Amsterdam family apartment. The interior is completely unrecognizable from its original state, once cramped full of long corridors, doorways and small rooms. The new interior turned the house into one big open, spacious interior with the central feature being a striking white kitchen cabinet made from laser-cut MDF.

Retrospective dolls

After debuting in London and then traveling to Utrecht, the Netherlands, Viktor & Rolf's now iconic dolls - hand-made dolls wearing exact miniature replicas of key pieces designed by the duo - are now on exhibition in Studio Job Gallery.

The exhibit, comprised of more than 30 dolls, represents Viktor & Rolf's eccentric, often quirky look upon fashion design, balancing between wearable clothing versus wearable art.

The dolls are a great statement; perfect to show the Dutch fashion design duo’s retrospective, spanning 17 years of innovative and boundary-pushing fashion. A phenomenal exhibition showcasing many of their brilliant work since their characteristic brand's formation in 1993.

Today the (Dutch) site ‘Mapping arts & culture' was officially launched; a worthwhile initiative that puts the spotlight on arts and culture. The site, an online platform, wants to share and show the meaning of arts and culture to the bigger audience; share inspiration and acknowledge that arts and cultures are anywhere in our society and very essential to all of us, even though we don’t always realize this. In so many ways arts and culture inspire all of us, and can be found anywhere, in any way you can imagine. At the same time the project is a wake up call for the politic – time to open some eyes and let them know that arts & culture matter and do more than we sometimes take for granted for! Great concept and very curious what this will lead to and cause within the society and arts & cultural related communities…

Meet the beautiful conceptual work of Swedish Johan Lindstén, one of Scandinavia's most promising young Scandinavian designers. Recently Johan participated in Stockholm Design Week's exhibition "Check In 10". I love how Johan, by playing with traditional embroidery and classic, simple furniture style elements, was able to create a new, contemporary look that brings back a dreamy, but long lost sentimental value.

This striking house, located on the IJburg district in Amsterdam, has been for sale for a couple of months now, so it was about time to share this here on Orange Pop Design. The stunning home with it's fresh interior, filled with many designs from (mainly) young Dutch designers, belongs to the Dutch couple Ben Lambers (art director) and Tatjana Quax (photo stylist), who work together under the name of Studio Aandacht.

Studio Aandacht has worked on a number of impressive projects, including numerous productions for Elle Decoration, Dutch department store Hema and Dutch children's brand Tumble 'n Dry and many more.

Although the name made me a bit suspicious at first, I was pleasantly surprised to find they have a site dedicated to wooden designs. On the site they show some serious cool work, with the Crossed Stick chair of Korean Designer Samwoong Lee being one of my favorites. Definitely worth checking out!

Two of my favorite Dutch designers, the duo Scholten & Baijings, have again surpassed themselves by creating this remarkable 'Paper Table' flat ware set. With this project, Scholten & Baijings present their vision for the art of dining. The amazing subtle but beautifully elegant folded cardboard models for the crockery are translated into light grey, unglazed porcelain cups and plates.

I am sure you understand why the set was immediately added to my wish list. All I have to do now is be patient. Royal Leerdam Crystal, Koninklijke Van Kempen & Begeer and the Audax Textile Museum have joined forces to produce the prototypes of the designs, but it's not sure yet when 'Paper Table' will hit the stores.

As a student at Savannah College of Art and Design Bang-yao Liu worked on this great 'pixel-like stop motion' animation, created by using only Post-its. To make this took about 3 months of planning, more than 6,000 Post-its and 4 days to shoot. By using clever interactions between the actor and Post-its, Bang-yao represents the constant struggle between time (deadlines) and the never-ending 'to do' lists in a fun and neat way.

Tea dance

The talented Amsterdam-based German/Iranian designer Siba Sahabi has produced an exquisite Moroccan tea set. This stunning 'Tea dance' collection of teapots and glasses takes its inspiration from a colonial ritual; in polite French-colonized Moroccan society, ladies, such as the host, her daughters or the servants, were asked to perform dances to amuse the guests who had been invited for tea.

The collection is made out of wallpaper, used for its strength and resistance to light. Siba, interested in adding a third dimension to paper and curious what possibilities were available in stead of traditional methods like origami or pulp, experimented with the material to learn more about its potentials and found a technique to build sculptures by cutting, folding, rolling and gluing paper strips.

'Tea dance' is part of the exhibition 'Paperficial' on show at the gallery Craft2eu in Hamburg from 10 March until 8 May 2010.

In order to explore the body and the body's relationship to tectonic reality, Alex Suarez of international design studio SpaceOperaForm designed this cool reactive 'WhiteOut' installation in the Hallein Salt Factory in Salzburg. As visitors walk through, the light weight panels react to the body's static condition to widen and narrow the passage. The faster one moved through, the more the panels inflated. Wow. Can you imagine the (fun) responds of visitors, not knowing about the interaction between them and these panels and being surprised while checking the space out?

I hope you haven't kept you waiting here? Unfortunately my schedule didn't leave me with much time to sit down and write some posts the last couple days. I know, you'd think that, as a freelancer, I'd have more time for blogging. Ironically, not. On top of that my computer has a mind of it's own and interfered with everything I did do (I've been playing around and working on a new design for the blog). But... I did manage to continue and collect some great items for the blog again, so plenty to share this week. Now, let's get going...!

One of the first things I want to show you is the amazing VitraHaus, built by the prestigious Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. This is the new home of the Vitra Home collection, where you can discover all the products, arranged per living and work situation. Curious about the interior? Check the 3D panoramas of the inside of the VitraHaus and its furnishings.

For those of you who are not familiar with Vitra, Vitra has a great collection, if not the best, of classics from designers like Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi, Verner Panton and Jean Prouvé. They also have some amazing contemporary designs by Maarten van Severen, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Antonio Citterio, Hella Jongerius, Jasper Morrison and others.

And having all of these designers' products under this new roof might be the new German heaven on earth, a good seven hours away from home. This calls for a road trip soon and see with my very own eyes...

What a great, comfortable and welcoming home this is, so light and balanced! Although it is already close to perfection, it would be heaven on earth if I could replace the couch with a (contemporary or old Chesterfield) leather sofa, throw in some Arne Jacobsen and Jielde lamps and put in a white modern kitchen or a retro (wooden) one. Today the TransNatural, an art and design exhibition looking at the crossover between nature and technology, is opening at the Trouw building in Amsterdam.

Australian Lucy McRae, now living in the Netherlands, is one of the designers and scientists who is presenting their work during the Multiplex TransNatural. Being a 'hybrid' (trained as a classical ballerina and interior designer, involved in anything varying from photography to graphic design and from styling to arts) Lucy has been involved in several (futuristic) commercial and non-profit projects, straddling the world of fashion, technology and the body. With her fascination with the human body she acts as a true 'body architect' and creates the most amazing things.

When looking for more information on Terunobu I found out he has made some great models and designs too that are playful, fun, inspiring and renewing. They made me think of Hundertwasser's architecture and paintings; almost as if Terunobu's designs are the modest, modern, and dreamy variations to it.

Last weekend ‘a single man’ finally premiered in the cinemas here. Just knowing Tom Ford, formerly known as Mr. Gucci, is on board makes you expect a visually stunning movie. And what a beauty it was indeed...! The costumes, styling, interior... everything was just so perfect.

However, what really caught my eye and I immediate fell for, was the redwood, concrete and glass residence, designed in 1949 by John Lautner. This architectural gem, located in the Whiting Woods area of Glendale (527 Whiting Woods Road, Glendale 91208), was instantly added to my wish list. The best thing about it? It's for sale!

Swedish architects Elding Oscarson have completed this small modern house of 75 square meters sandwiched between very old neighboring buildings in Landskrona, Sweden.

Neat how the sharp contrast highlights how new and old architecture beautifully can be combined. The light, white interior, a single open space, connects all floors cleverly and invite you to enjoy all areas.

Some of you may know that this past week was Amsterdam’s International Fashion Week. An event that always leaves it’s marks in the city, and makes us all curious to see the best, most creative and inspiring autumn/winter 2010 collections.

This year Taiwanese designer Lifu Hsiao presented, in a 17th century cellar underneath a monumental bridge, his simple but oh so perfectly tailored debut collection for winter 2010.

Lifu Hsiao graduated at the Fashion Institute Arnhem, the Netherlands, in 2008. After gaining working experience at Veronique Branquinho in 2009, he launched his own womens label Étranger. With his label, he strives to help women reaching “humanity and emotions” through his designs. Lifu Hsiao works and lives in Amsterdam.

Another amazing therapeutic project is ‘make something cool everyday’ by American artist Brock Davis. In 2009, for 365 consecutive days, Brock worked on one creative work per day. The constant in his exceptional track record is being able to transform humor and insights into work that gets a reaction. I wish I had the patience to work on such... nice!

After months of work, visual artist Andrée-Anne Dupuis-Bourret presented her project 'La Debacle' just a couple of weeks ago. An installation made from several modules, black and white copies of drawing, each folded by hand. I love how the installation looks like a carpet transformation; a graphic landscape of drawings creating new perspectives and depths.

Although I'm absolutely not in favour of promoting anything fur, I really enjoy designer Magnhild Disington’s experimental work 'Furry Object'. So, just this time, this one time, I'll make an exception...

Magnhild’s work was among the finalists for this year’s competition ‘The Golden Fur Needle’ held by Kopenhagen Fur. Furry Object 2.0, the modern amulet, is a collection of USB sticks, and was selected for the industrial design category, as they possess fur elements combined with portable electronics.
The project Furry Objects can bee seen as a continuity of Magnhild's MA project Deviated Evolution where she explores the relationship between humans and their portable electronics, and the lack of emotional appeal these products provide. O Mia...

Polish photographers Szymon Roginski and Kasia Korzeniecka worked together on a project for the “O Mia O” spring/summer collection of Ania Kuczynska. They photographed the collection which they then cut up and transformed into 3d objects. The final result was photographed again and than used for the “O Mia O” collection. Wonderful effect!

As my New Year’s resolution is to make the blog a joy for all Orange Pop Design’s readers, I intend to make this (blog) year one that will be full of articles, finds, gifts, surprises and interviews. If you feel your designs or products cannot be missed and should be featured on the blog, please give a shout. Now, let’s kick off with an exclusive interview (thank you again, Sarah!) with the wonderful, ever enthusiastic Sarah Brannon from fashion label Chelsea Rebelle. Sarah's designs are modern and flirty, whimsical with a dark twist, always focusing on luxurious fabrics and a sleek silhouette. Sarah just launched her the 2010 spring/summer collection ‘Oh you pretty things’, which is absolutely amazing. Aren't the items fabulous and fun?

Chelsea Rebelle (CR) seems to be quite ‘new’ in the fashion industry, but you have been around for almost 10 years. Was it hard for you to enter the existing industry?
CR officially launched in 2005, prior to that I did different lines on the side but never confident enough to go head first into my own line. It was a natural transition though, upon studying fashion I began making clothes for myself, then for friends, then for friends of friends, then for strangers and so it grew organically. Once I decided to start a "proper" label I had relocated from New Zealand to the United States. The United States is a much different market, harder to break into, so nearly five years into it and I'm finally getting some recognition. It has not been without it's ups and downs though, the biggest down been a fire in my studio just three months after launching the line…it destroyed everything! I persevered though, and I'm glad I did as I can't imagine doing anything else.

Can you tell a little bit about CR? Where does the name come from and how your signature can be described? How can a true CR be recognized?
I came up with Chelsea Rebelle because my own name is a little dull! I took Chelsea from a song by a little known English band called These Animal Men and Rebelle is Rebel in French. I thought Rebel sounded a little harsh; Rebelle is a little softer but still tough. My signature
look is feminine, flirty, playful and a little rebellious! I think the bow is becoming a standout CR feature…I just love bows!

The last couple of years more and more magazines and stylists seem to have picked up on CR. Can you tell us how this has impacted CR and yourself?
It is great! Not only is it amazing to get some recognition, it definitely helps with sales! I have worked so hard to get to where I am, I've done everything on my own. It is easy to start a line, get a showroom and a PR company and get recognition immediately, but I feel I’ve earned it. I want longevity out of this as I think it can be a bad thing to get over exposed too soon so I'm happy that I'm only just gaining momentum in the fashion world.

Is CR about fashion, or more? And what or who inspires you/who do you admire and is reflected in your design?
It's definitely about more! It's about creating a story, an escape, a fantasy. My inspirations are rather vast. I have my staples, Lolita, England, youth culture, music, outcasts, misfits and rebels but each season I take on a strong theme. I am a total sponge, and love to absorb things from art to films to buildings, photographs even cemeteries. I can literally be inspired by anything. The specific theme I take on for a collection is reflected in my designs in different ways, sometimes it's obvious and sometimes not so. It can be in a print, fabric finish or trim. As far as people I admire, there are so many! Edie Sedgewick is high on my list, Lolita even though she is fictitious!

Who is the woman you have in mind when designing a new collection?
She is stylish yet quirky, a bit of a rebel and an outcast but always the cool kid and a free thinker!

What has been the inspiration for your latest (awesome!) collection?
Awww….thank you! "Oh you pretty things" was inspired by listening to far too much T Rex and David Bowie! In the early stages of dreaming up this collection I found myself sitting in the studio listening to these two constantly, then my friend showed me some old footage he had of the both of them; they were both just such amazing talents not to mention their
incredible style. They were well ahead of their times both musically and style wise. I took aspects of their style such as glitter and spandex and incorporated it into a CR girl.

What to you is the perfect outfit or creation?
Oh, gosh, that's a tough one; I just love so many different things! I guess I'd have to say anything Viktor & Rolf! From their couture to their ready to wear to their branding, logo and packaging, it's perfection!!!

Best advice you’ve ever received?
On the business side of things a wonderful fashion writer once told me to preserver and told me how she has watched many designers come and go over the years and the ones that can tough it out eventually make their mark. Perhaps that seems like logic, but it's a hard industry, sometimes you just want to quit so it's inspiring to hear something like that from a well respected writer.

What brands do you wear yourself?
I tend to wear a lot of vintage, band tee shirts and Marc Jacobs. I love vintage because it's like no other, band tee shirts are just a staple in my wardrobe and Marc Jacobs is brilliant, totally wearable and on trend but classic and timeless. Oh and my friend Linda Wong's line The Battalion, they make the best pants ever!!! Black, skinny, stylized, and super comfy, they are an eco bamboo knit but they look like jeans! If I had the option I think I'd wear Viktor & Rolf, Chanel and Vivienne Westwood everyday but I will always love vintage and band tees!

Are there any plans to expand and have your designs sold in more countries ?
Yes, I really want to expand CR into the European market, I think CR is very suited to Europe. Also Australia, I think they have a great fashion sense. Of course New York is on the list as is Japan…I pretty much want world domination!!!

Where your designs can be found?
The current season is will be available from Feb 2010 at Wolf and Badger in London, online at Not Just A Label, Coco Career and The Moon and Mars. There will be more to come but we are just coming out of a recession, many stores I did sell too have closed down so I'm taking things slowly and placing myself in hand selected boutiques.

Extinct toys

How beautiful are these handcrafted wooden toys...? Josh Finkle selected four, recently extinct, animals for their beautiful shapes and patterns (the Tasmanian tiger, Quagga, Pigfooted bandicoot and Sea Cow). The toys are meant to incite wonder and interest in creatures that existed only a short while ago. Great approach! Also, the packaging when unfolded becomes an information graphic about the animal inside.

Five star crockery

For inspiration for a Kladblok project Amsterdam-based designer Judith Montens looked into the rituals of collecting and the trophy collections of celebrities. The first two in the series of the Five Star Crockery collection refer to the rare insect collection of Johnny Depp and car collection of Jay Leno.

"(...) Through objects like the cabinet of curiosities, collecting was once a way to show your vision of the world. Over time, collecting has become more of an urge than a vision; nowadays it seems more a desire just to possess. (...). Like their collections, these objects are stripped of their function and become an art object or a trophy."

Hidden lines

The beautiful villa by Dutch SEARCH located in Vals, Switzerland, and carved out of a mountain wall, has already been featured on several sites and in Wallpaper. Where other sites merely focused on the architecture and not so much the interior design, I wanted to highlight the 'Hidden lines' design by Jeroen van Mechelen from Studio JVM who came up with the idea for a special cardboard cabinet which creates a guesthouse within this newly designed villa.

The idea to define the contours of the house and use a 3-dimensional cardboard matrix was inspired by the medieval painting 'St. Jerome in his study' by Antonella da Messina. Like this painting, the cardboard-carved "inverted chapel" becomes an autonomous space.

Droog goes fashion

Droog, a Dutch Design collective based in Amsterdam and set up in 1993 as a statement on design, might be known for setting fashions in the world of product and furniture design. However, per this month creative laboratory Droog will also bring Dutch fashion items and accessories to the Droog collection in New York, including labels by Corné Gabriëls, Gluejeans, Orson + Bodil, Painted, and Jan Taminiau.

Since Viktor & Rolf seems to be the only Dutch fashion design you will find in New York, Droog wanted to tap these talents and broaden the range of products in the New York store with exclusive fashion, books and items connected to architecture like the Lace Fence by Demakersvan. Way to go Droog!

This weekend has been an awesome weekend. It has been a very cold one, minus 10 Celsius (which is a bit unusual for here) with lots and lots of snow. Saturday the snow and terrace heaters were begging for a spontaneous 'après-ski' outside. Right in front of our houses, at the end of the afternoon, we got together with all of our neighbor friends and shared warm glühwein, home-made pea soup, hot chocolate and Dutch oliebollen. Sunday was spent by drinking more hot chocolate, throwing snow balls, sleigh riding, making Christmas cards and getting high on chocolate Christmas cookies. A wonderful way to spend the weekend, but the more reason to spread the joy and share some more beautiful finds!
